Facts About Lung Cancer

The maximum number of cancer deaths in the United States related can be associated with lung cancer. Statistics highlight the occurrence of this disease in about 180,000 people in the U.S. each year. It is estimated also that this very large number, 86 percent do not survive more than 5 years from the time of diagnosis.
For decades, it was believed that men are more susceptible to lung cancer compared to women. However, this myth shattered in 1987 with a mortality rate of lung cancer than breast cancer in women. The cause of this fact can be accredited to increased smoking among women. In addition, the female estrogen hormone is thought to also encourage the growth of lung cancer.

The biggest cause of lung cancer is tobacco smoke. The chemicals in cigarette smoke are known to be carcinogens, thus casting a damaging effect on one’s health. 90 percent of those affected by lung cancer is known or ex-smokers. The risk of contracting lung cancer is said to be directly proportional to the duration and amount smoked. The possibility of contracting the disease, increased by 10 percent for those who smoked one pack of cigarettes a day and up to 25 percent when smoked two packs. Passive smokers are so susceptible to this disease. The same goes for cigar and pipe smokers. Individuals involved in the profession with the use of asbestos project a higher susceptibility to lung cancer. Other risks of lung cancer are radiation therapy to the lungs, personal history, family history, air pollution and diet.
