Manufactured and marketed by Pfizer Inc, Zoloft is approved by the FDA for the treatment of psychological disorders in adults and children that include clinical depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder and social anxiety disorder.

The composition is known as generic Zoloft sertraline hydrochloride. This drug was developed with the aim of increasing uptake of serotonin in the brain and improve neurotransmission. Zoloft can also be used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder and premenstrual dysphoric mood disorder.

Administration Zoloft is associated with certain risks. The most common side effects of Zoloft include nausea, sleep disturbances, irritability, drowsiness, anxiety, behavioral changes, panic attacks and diarrhea. Zoloft should not be recommended for individuals taking drugs such as disulfram, pimozide and monoamine oxidase inhibitors such as isocarboxazid, phenelzine and rasagiline. All drugs including antidepressants sertraline can increase suicidal tendencies in children and adolescents under the age of 25 years. Other possible side effects of Zoloft include seizures, weight loss and erectile dysfunction. Zoloft is prescribed for lactating and pregnant women because it can cause serious developmental defects of the lungs and brain in newborn infants.
