Have Asthma But Still Have Strong Bones

Inhaling steroids reduce bone density.
Experts predict that the problem of excess weight or obesity may be a cause of the 28% increased in asthma for women since the age of 9 years. But, it’s just not the weight problems that need our attention, but also bone density.
Apparently either steroid medication or oral (inhalers) have harmful effect on bone density. A study of 196 people with asthma, the researchers found a decrease in bone density in patients with asthma who use inhaled steroids after a long period of time.
But due to the benefits of steroids inhaled effectiveness in asthma treatment right now. It can now be said that the use of steroid is greater than the risk itself. However, because most patients with asthma sometimes require treatment in the long term, then this condition implies that there is an increased risk of osteoporosis. Here are some tips to minimize these risks:
Bone Density
Keep the bone density from deep inside. It is recommended that we do 30 minutes of exercise or jog for 5 days or more a week. For those under 50 years fulfill the needs of the bones with 1,000 mg of calcium and vitamin D of 400 IU (International Units) per day. For ages 50 years and older, the recommended dose is 1,500 mg of calcium and 800 IU vitamin D as much.
Add a spacer or an intermediary with an inhaler device. This tool is very useful in the use of inhaled steroids, because with the spacer then surely most of the drug will go directly into the lungs instead of being too long in the mouth and throat. In this way, we can also reduce the use of steroids and suppress absorption in our bones. To minimize absorption, are suggested to n gargle every time after using the inhaler. For this dose, we can ask our doctors to prescribe the lowest dose to control symptoms of asthma.
Bone Tests
If we are forced to use a steroid inhaled with high dose as the only cure for asthma for 10 years or more. Don’t be afraid to ask for a bone density test from your doctor.
