Prevent Blindness Due To Macular Damage

One of the causes of blindness are macular degeneration or tissue damage to the eyeball or commonly known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

The macula is the part of the eye that serves to filter out damaging rays of the eye. Macular works to scavenge free radicals contained in the blue light (blue rays) damaging the eye. Blue light rays are generally comes from electronic items such as cell phones, computers, televisions, and sunlight. Knowledge about AMD is still relatively minimal, so people are usually not aware of it. Plus, AMD appears without any initial symptoms first.

AMD makes the sufferer not clear when viewing an object. Objects appear blurry, no focus, there are blind spot (black area) in the middle of an object, or a contrasting color change. Usually people with AMD will have difficulty to read as the passages are covered by the blind spot.

The exact cause of AMD is unknown. However, there are several factors that allegedly increase the risk of AMD.
Among other things, smoking, drinking alcohol, hypertension, cataracts, and genetic factors. The people who work outdoors are also at high risk.

AMD disease cannot be cured. Therefore, prevention efforts need. Prevention can be done is by eating fruits and vegetables rich in lutein and zeaxanthin substances such as carrots, spinach, corn, broccoli, green beans, chickpeas, and tomatoes.
